About WritingTrace
We build forensic writing analysis tools that restore trust in student authorship through transparent process evidence.
Our Mission
The rise of generative AI has created a crisis of trust in education. AI detectors emerged as a quick fix, but their false positive rates — documented at up to 26% by Stanford researchers in 2023 — have led to wrongful accusations and eroded the student-teacher relationship.
WritingTrace takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of asking "Was this text generated by AI?" we ask "How was this text actually written?" By capturing and visualizing the complete writing process — every keystroke, every pause, every revision — we give educators direct evidence rather than probabilistic guesses.
Our goal is to shift academic integrity conversations from accusation to coaching, where the writing process itself becomes a learning tool.

Product & Research Team
The WritingTrace team combines expertise in education technology, information security, and writing pedagogy. We work closely with educators across K-12 and higher education to build tools that serve their real-world needs for authorship verification and writing process analysis.
Our Principles
Evidence, Not Algorithms
We show the actual writing process rather than making probabilistic claims. Educators see the evidence and draw their own conclusions.
Privacy by Architecture
On-device processing isn't an afterthought — it's the foundation. Student data never leaves the browser. FERPA compliance is built into the design.
Coaching Over Accusation
Writing process visibility should empower constructive feedback conversations, not fuel punitive responses. We build tools that strengthen the student-teacher relationship.
